Fallen Hero PFC Andrew J. Sass, United States Army

PFC Andrew J. Sass

September 24, 1990 - June 21, 2014
United States Army

When I discussed this upcoming painting with Andrew’s mother, Dana Sass, she said she would like me to work from a snapshot taken of him with his dark glasses on. He was relaxing for a moment, and this was a favorite photo of his because he said he was “in his zone” at the time. So we worked from that photo and I lightened the glasses a bit so that his eyes would be seen somewhat. He had a nice expression, and I am pleased with how it turned out.

Andrew was born in Norfolk, Virginia to Terry Allen Sass of Goldsboro and Dana Jean Risener Sass of Indiana. He was a 2009 graduate of Rosewood High School. Andrew was proud to be serving his country in the United States Army but of most importance to Andrew was his family. It is said that he always worked very hard to make sure his wife and son were well cared for.

Unfortunately Andrew passed away suddenly while training in a military exercise at Fort Irwin, CA. He is survived by his wife Katie Sass; son, Will Sass; parents, Terry and Symantha Sass, and Dana Sass; brother, David Sass; sister Rebekah Sass; as well as several grandparents, in-laws, extended family, and many friends……all of whom loved him dearly.

Andrew’s mother, Dana, relates to me that her only child had a smile that was as big as the sun! He could always make others smile, and he was the best daddy ever! It was very much my honor to paint Andrew.
